Rose Planting

Rose Planting

Roses are one of the most beautiful plants that can be displayed in your garden. The fragrance is so lovely and the selection of colors can be traditional all the way to unique. In order to make sure that your roses will grow healthy and return year after year, spring and fall is the best time when to plant roses. It is a good idea to try and make sure that there will be no more frost, but if there is, you can cover your roses with a sheet or some kind of protection that will keep the frost off them. Anytime the ground is too cold and there is a potential for freezing weather, it is not a good time for planting. Here is a helpful guide of how to plant your roses in the appropriate season.

1. Locate a spot in the ground that will provide at least six hours of sun a day and soil that will provide good drainage. Roses also prefer acidic soil with a ph range of 5.8 to 6.3.

2. Make sure there is ample spacing between your roses and other plants.

3. Prune the roots of the roses by half an inch to boost growth. It is best to soak your roses in water for twenty-four hours before planting to help it with the change.

4. Dig a hole that is at least two square feet. Then you should build a small hill in the center of the hole and then arrange the roots on top of the hill. Place the roses inside the hole and put the excess dirt back in the hole. Make sure that the dirt securely supports the roses.

5. Mulch the surrounding area around the roses but leave several inches clear of mulch. Excessive mulching can cause the roses to rot.

6. Since the first several days of planting are the most crucial in producing healthy roses, you should make a small vessel of dirt around the base of the roses. This will help retain water so the roses to have plenty of moisture. The first week you should water the roses every day before sunrise or after sunset. You can start watering the roses every three days or so after the first week, depending on the weather situation.

7. When you start seeing new shoots coming out of the hill of dirt around your roses, it is safe to wash the dirt away. This is a sign of a healthy growing rose!

8. By following these steps, you will be sure to see beautiful and healthy roses growing. It will not be long before you can breathe in the fragrance of your gorgeous blooms!

Continue to care for your rose throughout the year. Add rose fertilizer to the soil every two to three months.
